Fantasy 40/40: Who’s Hot, Who’s Not

Who’s Hot

  • Gaby Sanchez FLA – Over the last seven days, he’s batting .519 with 2 HR, 9 RBI and 6 Runs.  He’s hitting .340 on the season and has proven his rookie year was no fluke.
  • Erick Aybar ANA - Stole 5 bases last week while going 13 for 32.  He won’t offer you power, but Aybar is playing well for his fantasy owners and he can be viewed as a solid SS option.
  • Raul Ibanez PHI – The guy couldn’t buy a hit for a while, now he can’t stop.  Over the last seven days, he’s 12 for his last 26 with 2 HR, 5 RBI and 4 R scored.
  • Adam Lind TOR – No one has been hotter than Adam Lind over the last week, batting .500 and driving in runs.  He’s been held out of the lineup the last two games due to back stiffness; hopefully he stays off the DL.
  • Adrian Gonzalez BOS – He’s had 3 HR in the last week and continues to hit over .300.  He’s starting to heat up and will be a fantasy stud by year’s end.
  • Starting Pitchers – We saw the first no-hitters of the year last week, with Francisco Liriano and Justin Verlander getting it done.  On top of that, Yovani Gallardo, Anibal Sanchez and Jaime Garcia flirted with greatness for a couple innings as well.

Who’s Not

  • Miguel Tejada SF – He’s been hurting at the plate lately and was replaced by Mark DeRosa at 3B the other day.  Keep an eye on Tejada; Fontenot is hitting and DeRosa is back.  Sandoval will return and Tejada might be S.O.L.
  • Kila Ka’aihue KC – With Eric Hosmer being brought up, someone had to go.  Bye bye Kila.  Or should I say, aloha?
  • Chris Young NYM – He’s got problems with his shoulder and will likely need to rehab or get surgery.  Either way, expect Young to miss most, if not all of the rest of this season.
  • Kelly Johnson ARI – After his stellar performance last season in the desert, Johnson is hitting a terrible .175 this season.  I told everyone who would listen last year that the Dbacks needed to trade him then to maximize his trade value.  Good luck with that now.  Hopefully, Johnson snaps out of it and can get back on track.  Until then, you may want to reserve him if you can.

Fantasy 40/40: Waiver Wire Pickups: Week #6

Here are some waiver-wire pickups for you out there in need of some bench or roster help.

  • Eric Hosmer KC – The super prospect got the call up and is here to stay.  Grab him in all formats and stash him if needed.  He should hit and be a contributing piece on your fantasy rosters.
  • Brandon Beachy ATL – I am only re-inserting him into this post because he is available in a lot of ESPN and CBS leagues.  He’s 1-1 with a sub 3.00 ERA and 45 K in 42.1 INN.
  • Homer Bailey CIN - Just returned from the DL and allowed one run in his first start.  He’s available in over 50% of CBS leagues, should have a good strikeout rate and collect some wins with that good lineup backing him.
  • Vicente Padilla LAD – No Jonathan Broxton, so Padilla is getting the chance to save games.  Kuo will factor in.  Kenley Jansen may get a shot too.  But, I’d pick up Padilla first.
  • Mark Melancon HOU – Brandon Lyon has tendinitis in his bicep and a partial tear of the rotator cuff.  Melancon will be the guy for now.
  • St. Louis Bullpen - Eduardo Sanchez and Fernando Salas seem like the guys you want right now.  Boggs and Motte may see some saves as well.  If you’re struggling for saves and desperate, you might want to roster these guys if you have the room.

Fantasy 40/40: Who’s Hot, Who’s Not

Who’s Hot

  • Ben Zobrist TB – He had a 8 RBI game and a 10 RBI day.  What else do I have to type?
  • Matt Joyce TB – Batted .526 over the last week including 2 HR, 6 RBI, 7 R and a SB.
  • Adam Lind TOR - Goes through hot and cold streaks.  He’s in a hot streak.  Over the last seven games, Lind hit 4 HR, drove in 10 runs while scoring 7 times.
  • Shin-Soo Choo CLE – Hit his first two homers of the season this week and is improving his BA.  He seems to finally be coming out of his funk and should remain a must start in leagues – he’s automatic for .300/20/90/80/20.
  • Lance Berkman HOU - The Big Puma continues to mash, hitting two more homers this week and keeping his BA at a robust .398.  I still think Berkman sees the DL sometime this season and would sell high if another owner covets the fleet-footed feline.
  • Andre Ethier LA - 27 games and counting.  A! S! U!
  • Ian Kennedy ARI – Had two starts this week, throwing a complete game shutout to beat the Phillies and got a no-decision in his start against the Cubs.  For the week, he threw 16.2 INN while giving up 3 earned and striking out 16.
  • Bud Norris HOU - A fantasy favorite of mine, Norris had 17 K in 13 INN this week, while earning his second win of the season.  He also registered back to back starts without giving up a run.
  • Phillip Humber CHW – He’s pitching well for the White Sox and could be grabbed in deeper mixed leagues.  In his two starts this week, Humber had a W, giving up 2 earned over 14 INN while punching out 10.
  • Matt Garza CHC - About time.  Garza finally got his first W of the year.  He also leads the Majors with 51 K in 38.2 INN.
  • Dustin Mosley SD - The dude is 1-3 with a 1.63 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP.  That’s the San Diego offense for you.

Who’s Not

  • Magglio Ordonez DET – Mags is 2 for his last 23 with 0 HR, 0 RBI, 0 R and 0 SB.  Sweet.
  • Raul Ibanez PHI - Ibanez had a nice week, going hitless in 16 ABs.
  • Jose Tabata PIT – He’s got some hamstring tightness, but has been pretty bad recently.  Over the last week, he’s batting .056 with 1RBI, 1 run and 0 SB.
  • Adam LaRoche WAS – Still in his usual funk, LaRoche was just 2 for 24 last week with 2 RBI.
  • St. Louis Bullpen – Franklin, Motte, Boggs, now Salas.
  • Third Basemen – Longoria should be coming back tomorrow.  Zimmerman has a rectus problem.  Sandoval broke his hamate bone (which saps power historically).  Freese will have surgery on his broken left hand.

Fantasy 40/40: Waiver Wire Pickups: Week #5

Here are some waiver-wire pickups for you out there in need of some bench or roster help.

  • Alex White CLE – Baseball America had him as the Indians number two prospect heading into 2011.  He’s go the stuff and makeup to be a middle rotation guy with potential to be a number one or two down the road.  He made his first start on Saturday, going 6 INN and allowing 2 earned against the Tigers.  Pick him up in AL onlys, keeper leagues and deeper mixed formats if you need the pitching.
  • Jack Hannahan CLE - No Zimmerman, no Panda, no Freese.  The Indians are winning and Hannahan isn’t a terrible injury replacement.  He’s hitting .273 with 4 HR, 14 RBI, 14 R and a SB.
  • Mike Aviles KC - Aviles is out of his funk and swinging a hot bat.  With all the injuries to third basemen this weekend, Aviles can serve as a decent stopgap.
  • Daniel Murphy NYM – He’s playing more and getting better defensively, which means more playing time.  He’s also batting second with Angel Pagan on the DL, Murphy may be serviceable as a MI option if needed.
  • Fernando Salas STL – The St. Louis bullpen has issues and Salas seems like the flavor of the week.  Last week, I would have said Boggs.  Two weeks ago?  Motte.  Next week?  Possibly Eduardo Sanchez.
  • Matt Joyce TB – Without Manny around, Joyce is seeing a lot of playing time and rewarding skipper Joe Maddon.  He hit 2 HR this weekend and can be used while he’s hitting.
  • Jerry Hairston Jr. WAS - Ryan Zimmerman will be out for at least six more weeks (A-HOLE!) and it looks like multiple people will see extra time.  Hairston might see the most ABs and might be a NL option moving forward; however, it’s rumored that Mike Morse might see some time at 3B to get Laynce Nix some ABs in the OF.  Stay tuned.

Fantasy 40/40: Fantasy News From The Baseball World – 4/29/11

Travel day, eleven games on the docket yesterday.

  • Ben Zobrist TB – Had a double header yesterday.  Game #1 stats: 4 for 6, HR, 8 RBI, 2 R, 2 doubles.  Game #2 stats: 3 for 4, HR, 2 RBI, 3 R, double and a SB.  His total stats for the day: 7 for 10, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 5 R, 3 doubles and a SB.  Ben Zobrist, my fantasy team thanks you.
  • Johnny Damon TB - Zobrist wasn’t the only Ray having fun yesterday.  He was 4 for 9 with a triple, RBI and 3 R scored.
  • B.J. Upton TB - 4 for 7 with 2 RBI, 3 R and a SB.
  • Stephen Drew ARI - Hit his first career grandslam.  Finished with a HR, 5 RBI and 3 R scored.
  • Miguel Montero ARI – He had a big day against the Cubbies as well, finishing 2 for 5 with a HR, 3 RBI and a R scored.
  • Chris Young ARI – Was 3 for 5 with a couple of doubles, 2 RBI and 2 R scored.
  • Jacoby Ellsbury BOS – Boston is winning again and Ellsbury has been heating up over the last week.  He was 3 for 5 with 2 RBI and 2 R scored yesterday; he now has a seven-game hitting streak.
  • Adrian Gonzalez BOS – Frustrated owners are at least seeing some production out of Gonzo.  He’s only got one HR on the year, but is also coming alive.  He was 3 for 5 with 2 RBI on Thursday and is now riding a five-game hitting streak.
  • Jon Lester BOS - Got the W against the Orioles, went 8 INN, 5 K, allowed 7 baserunners and 2 earned.  He’s now 3-1.
  • Ryan Dempster CHC - Ouch.  Lasted 0.1 INN, gave up 7 earned on 4 hits and 4 walks.  Ouch.  ERA for the day?  189.00.  WHIP for the day?  24.00.  Ouch.
  • Grady Sizemore CLE - 2 for 4 with a double, HR, 2 RBI and 2 R scored.
  • Ike Davis NYM – Went 2 for 4 with a double, RBI and a R scored in the loss, but extended his hitting streak to ten games.
  • Brett Gardner NYY – Gardner had a great fantasy game for his owners, 2 for 3 with a double, HR, RBI, 3 R and a SB.
  • C.C. Sabathia NYY – Got his second win of the season, beating the White Sox.  He gave up three runs, all unearned, while giving up 7 hits, walking one and striking out 6.
  • Michael Pineda SEA - The rookie won his fourth straight start, going 6 INN against the Tigers in Detroit, getiing 9 K and giving up 2 earned.
  • Justin Smoak SEA – He’s got a six-game hitting streak, continued it yesterday by going 1 for 3 with a RBI.  Also, had a three-game homerun streak snapped Thursday.  He’s got 25 HR upside and should be owned in mixed leagues as a CI option.
  • Lance Berkman STL – The Big Puma is on the prowl.  Do pumas prowl?  Stalk? Made a return to Houston and stole the show.  He was 4 for 5 with a double, 2 HR, 5 RBI and 3 R scored.  The Puma also has an eight-game hitting streak.
  • David Freese STL - Went 3 for 5 with a RBI and 2 R scored.
  • Matt Holliday STL – The Cards had a nine-run eighth inning and Holliday played a part, he was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI and a R scored on the day.
  • Elvis Andrus TEX - Stole 3 bases.
  • Adam Lind TOR - Hit his third HR in the last three games.
  • Ian Desmond WAS – Just got back to Washington after becoming a new dad.  He was 2 for 4 with a triple, HR, RBI and 2 R scored.  Maybe he should have kids more often.
