BallHype: hype it up!

Random Notes From Around the Diamond: Thursday Day Games

  • Carlos Pena TB – Went 3 for 4 with a HR and 4 RBI.  He’s batting a cut over .200 and has been kind of cold lately.  Only good for HR and BA aggravation.  He and Mark Reynolds are brothers from another mother.  Whose mom do you think would get pulled over in Arizona?
  • Carlos Gonzalez COL – CarGo (not a fan of his nickname.  I get it.  Just not a big fan.  Deserves better.  Something more creative) hit another bomb on Thursday – making it 19 on the year.  He’s on pace for 29/22.  Yes please.  Must start.
  • Clint Barmes COL – Every year Barmes is forgotten about and every year he produces enough to be relevant in some leagues – usually better left for NL onlys.  Plays 2B/SS.  Only batting around .250 for the year, he did his part to improve that by going 2 for 5 with 3 RBI, a R and a SB.
  • Dexter Fowler COL - He’s been terrible after the All-Star break and been bench worthy.  He still is, but got the start on Thursday afternoon and rewarded Jim Tracy with a 3 for 5 performance including a 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R and a SB.  Very nice.  Now keep it up.
  • Ike Davis NYM - Hit a 3-run shot off Cardinal starter Blake Hawksworth. It was Davis’ 15th of the season. He’s been up and down for a while – a decent CI or U option in deep mixed leagues.
  • Matt Diaz ATL - With Nate McClouth getting sent down, playing time is up for grabs and Diaz wants some.  He had a HR in the loss to the Nationals – getting hot in July since coming off the DL.  Diaz warrants time in NL only leagues.
  • Michael Stanton FLA – He’s a manchild.  2 for 3.  2 doubles.  2 RBI.  Another BA anchor, he might be another to the mold of the aforementioned Mark Reynolds.  I think that’s the first time I’ve ever used, said or written the word, “aforementioned.”  Huh.
  • Ian Desmond WAS - After a promising start to his freshman year, Desmond seems to hit the proverbial “rookie wall.”  He’s slumping, batting .186 since June 15th – 32 games.  Ouch.  However, the young rookie did go 2 for 3 with a HR and and 2 R scored.  He has potential and looks to be a part of the future their.  Hang on to him – but start a better option if you have one for the time being.
  • Adam Dunn WAS - Speaking of future’s… With the trade rumors swirling, Dunn continues to do what he do.  HR.  Number 24.  He’ll be wearing another suit by Monday.
  • Ubaldo Jimenez COL - He’s back.  7 INN.  6 K.  4 hits.  1 ER.  And a W.  It was the Pirates, but still.
  • RA Dickey NYM - Arguably the Mets’ second or third most important pitcher right now, Dickey continues to throw effective innings.  He went 8.1 INN on Thursday against the Cards while allowing only 1 run, 2 K, 2 BB and scattered 4 hits.  He’s now 6-2 with 60 K, a 2.55 ERA and 1.20 WHIP over 84.2 INN.  It’s not a fluke anymore.  Pick him up if you need some pitching help.
  • Dominic Brown PHI - He’s up.  Shane Victorino is on the DL.  Brown will get time.  You get the picture.  Keeper leagues – adios.  NL – no mas.  Deeper Mixed – take a shot.
  • Logan Morrison FLA – SEE: Brown, Dominic.  Substitute Victorino with Chris Coghlan, or moron busting his knee pie-ing someone.  That’s right, another player ending his season celebrating.
