INITIAL THOUGHTS & REACTIONS: OK.  It happens to the best of us.  There weren’t many prospects that I wanted to come away with.  Heyward happened to be one of them.  I took Bruce in the 8th round expecting Heyward to be there in the 9th at 103.  HE WASN’T.  I took Alvarez, maybe on emotion of losing Heyward.  LESSON TO BE LEARNED.  But – Alvarez was on that list plus he’s a higher rated player than some that have already gone.  He’s projected to play 3B for years to come, ETA mid-2010.  He has 40HR potential and should fit in the middle of that lineup sooner in 2010 than later, possibly May or June if Andy LaRoche can’t find his swing.  Wow.  I drafted 2 Pirates willingly.  Weird.

40/40 CLUB after Round 9 – Utley 2B.  Tulowitzki SS.  Votto 1B.  Markakis OF.  McCutchen OF.  Phillips 2B.  Ian Stewart 3B.  Jay Bruce OF.  Pedro Alvarez 3B.

More prospects begin to get snagged – Strasburg (99), Heyward (102) and Alvarez (103).  I wanted Heyward.  I own him in my other keeper league and missed out on him by 1 pick.  1 pick.  PHUCK!  You know what I mean?

Oft-injured Alfonso Soriano goes at pick #106.  You can grab him real late now – maybe better off passing; kind of like Chipper Jones.  Both had nice careers; but, their time might be over.  Grab a Franklin Gutierrez or a Hunter Pence instead a couple rounds later, both younger with more upside.

Two young Athletics go at the end of the round, Anderson and Bailey.  I like Anderson long-term; I see Bailey losing saves to Devine and Ziegler  - I’d be hesitant to take Bailey this early.  Closers are a revolving door – especially under Billy in Oakland (Isringhausen, Kock, Taylor, Street, Duchscherer, Embree, Ziegler, Bailey).

Round 10

  • 10.109 Kingston We Be Buntin’- Michael Bourn OF HOU
  • 10.110 St. Louis Rick Ankiel’s Wild Pitches – Jered  Weaver SP LAA
  • 10.111 Rogers Naturals – Geovanny Soto C CHC
  • 10.112 San Diego The Smashing Blumpkins – Francisco Rodriguez CL NYM
  • 10.113 Las Vegas Phantom Aces – Carlos Beltran OF NYM
  • 10.114 Scottsdale 40/40 Club – Derrek Lee 1B CHC
  • 10.115 Hanford Hye-Lites – Lance Berkman 1B HOU
  • 10.116 Mission Viejo Andy Likes To Pettite – Yunel Escobar SS ATL
  • 10.117 Anaheim Smog – Kurt Suzuki C OAK
  • 10.118 Scottsdale BOHICA – Joakim Soria CL KC
  • 10.119 Moorpark Nago’s Rippas Brah – Brian Wilson CL SF
  • 10.120 Richmond Night Crawlers – John Lackey SP BOS

INTIAL THOUGHTS & REACTIONS: I took Derrek Lee at pick #114.  I felt like I took the best player available.  In the points scoring system, I have him as a TOP 8 1B because of his .300AVG, many 2B and BB.  The great thing about this league is that you set a depth chart at the beginning of the week –  If your #1 guy sits, your #2 guy accumulates the stats for that day.  If your #1 and #2 sit, your #3 plays and so on…  I now have Votto and Lee at 1B.  Depending on how they are playing, I can rotate Votto, Lee and Phillips into my 1B and DH spots.

40/40 CLUB after Round 10 – Utley 2B.  Tulowitzki SS.  Votto 1B.  Markakis OF.  McCutchen OF.  Phillips 2B.  Ian Stewart 3B.  Jay Bruce OF.  Pedro Alvarez 3B.  Derrek Lee 1B.

A cheaper, “B” version of Jacoby Ellsbury goes in Michael Bourn with pick #109 to We Be Buntin’.  Good value for 50 SB.

A small closer run occurs – It’s funny how “runs” of positions occur like TE’s in fantasy football drafts.  Last round, you saw a prospect start one.  This time around, 3 closers go.

I think Beltran, Lee and Berkman will all be starting for their respective fantasy teams by the end of the year.
