Fantasy 40/40: Dynasty Draft – Day 2

The dynasty draft continues…  Recap, with my first 2 picks, I selected Chase Utley, 2B, PHI,  at pick #7 and Troy Tulowitzki, SS, COL, at pick #18.

Round 3

  • 3.2s Richmond Night Crawlers-Jose Reyes, SS Mets
  • 3.26 Moorpark Nago’s Rippas Brah- Matt Holliday, OF, STL
  • 3.27 BOHICA – Jon Lester, SP, Boston
  • 3.28 Anaheim Smog – Ian Kinsler, 2B, Rangers
  • 3.29 Mission Viejo Andy Likes To Pettite- Ryan Zimmerman, 3B, WAS
  • 3.30 Hanford Hye-Lites – Mark Reynolds, 3B/1B, ARI
  • 3.31 Scottsdale 40/40 Club – Joey Votto, 1B, CIN
  • 3.32 Las Vegas Phantom Aces – Dustin Pedroia, 2B, BOS
  • 3.33 San Diego The Smashing Blumpkins – Curtis Granderson, OF, NYY
  • 3.34 Rogers Naturals – Derek Jeter, SS, NYY
  • 3.35 St. Louis Rick Ankiel’s Wild Pitches- Grady Sizemore, OF, CLE
  • 3.36 Sean Paul, Kingston We Be Buntin’- Jayson Werth, OF, PHI

INITIAL THOUGHTS AND REACTIONS: I had A. Gonzalez, Zimmerman, Votto as my 3 next choices staying with my strategy.  Reynolds went before me – I’m ok with that, not really a fan.  I selected Joey Votto with my 31st pick.  He’s 26 and his power trends are all heading upwards.  He plays in a Nintendo ballpark and should continue to get better.  I see .300, 30HR, 100 RBI, 75 RUNS and even 5 SB.  He once stole 17 in AAA; not saying its going to happen again, I’m just saying  And like I said, he’s only 26 and adds to my young and impressive infield.

40/40 CLUB after 3 rounds - 2B: Utley. SS: Tulowitzki. 1B: Votto.

I considered Pedroia, but Utley blocks him at 2B and we only get 1 DH spot (no U) – wanted to hold onto to that for a little flexibility drafting later.

Reyes goes with the first pick of the 3rd round with #26 and is paired with Ellsbury at #25 on the back half of 2 picks.  Add that to his first pick, Hanley Ramirez, and Night Crawlers has more speed than anyone, lacking power however.

Lester is the 6th SP taken off the board behind the big 5 by BOHICA.  He has great upside squeezing in-between Beckett and Lackey.

Anaheim Smog again get his man after passing on Kinsler earlier.  He gets him on the way back and snags 2 of his guys.

Jeter goes 34 adding to Howard and Wright in the Naturals infield.

Granderson goes before with points for triples and his new ballpark playing factors.  Sizemore and Werth both offer 20/20 for Wild Pitches and We Be Buntin’ and good value in a dynasty at the back end of round 3.

Dynasty and keeper traits start to permeate their way into the draft.  Age and upside begin to affect decisions and placement of talent.

Round 4

  • 4.37 Kingston We Be Buntin’- Adam Wainwright, SP, STL
  • 4.38 St. Louis Rick Ankiel’s Wild Pitches-Robinson Cano, NYY
  • 4.39 Rogers Naturals – Cliff Lee, SP, SEA
  • 4.40 San Diego The Smashing Blumpkins-  Dan Haren, SP,  ARI
  • 4.41 Las Vegas Phantom Aces – Jimmy Rollins, SS, PHI
  • 4.42 Scottsdale 40/40 Club – Nick Markakis, OF, BAL
  • 4.43 Hanford Hye-Lites – Adam Lind, OF, TOR
  • 4.44 Mission Viejo Andy Likes To Pettite- Justin Verlander, SP, Tigers
  • 4.45 Anaheim Smog – Josh Johnson, SP, FLA
  • 4.46 Scottsdale BOHICA – Brian McCann, C, ATL
  • 4.47 Moorpark Nago’s Rippas Brah – Johan Santana, SP, NYM
  • 4.48 Richmond Night Crawlers – Kevin Youkilis, 1B/ 3B, BOS

INTIAL THOUGHTS AND REACTIONS: The run on starting pitching began as Wainwright, Lee and Haren went all before me.  Haren was my guy if he fell.  Otherwise, I was looking for the best avaiable or a nice OF bat.  My options came down to Nick Markakis and Adam Lind.  Both are 26 and both can mash.  I chose Markakis because of his track record and potential 15 SB.  he bats .300-20-90-90-10.  Again, he’s only 26 staying with my youth movement.  He’s also posted over 40 doubles the last 3 years before age 25 (80 pts in our league).  That list he joins – over 40 doubles in 3 seasons by 25 include: Gehrig, Musial, Yastrzemski, Mattingly, Pujols, Wright and H. Ramirez.

40/40 CLUB after 4 rounds – 2B: Utley. SS: Tulowitzki. 1B: Votto. OF: Markakis.

A total of 6 SP were selected in round 4.

Cano is the 4th 2B off the board to Wild Pitches. I like Cano and his potential for a batting title in the future.

McCann is the 2nd C off the board going to BOHICA.  1st catcher selected since Mauer at pick 13.

Santana is a guy who may provide the best value in the long run.  A little risk involved, but he is still a legit ace and dominant #1.  If he shows he’s healthy and with the Mets offense healthy (Reyes, Wright, Bay) Santana would not surprise me if he won 18 with a 3.oo ERA for Rippas Brah.  Downside is he could spend time on the DL post surgery this off-season.

I thought about Verlander too, who went to Andy Likes to Petitte (maybe my favorite team name).  He’s 27 and strikes out a lot of hitters.  But with his past seasons being inconsistent, I couldn’t do it.  It also scared me that he had the highest pitch count of any pitcher in MLB last year.
