Fantasy 40/40: On The Clock: 2010 Fantasy Baseball Draft Scenarios

Here’s the scenario.  You are in a 12 team, mixed Rotisserie league.  It’s mid-draft and your on the clock.  You have secured the best infield possible with backups only needed.  You already grabbed your 2 aces you were aiming for and you are now in the market for a third OF to start filling out your lineup.  You also want a starting C and another closer, but can wait because of replacement options available.  You have narrowed it down to 3 players you like, who do you take?

Michael Bourn, Jay Bruce or Michael Cuddyer?

Player selection depends on various factors that affect the owner’s ultimate decision.  Just by reading this introduction doesn’t explain everything, doesn’t mean you know what the team needs, categories they need help in.

If you are in need of speed and some SB help, Bourn is the obvious choice.  Say your infield consists of Teixiera, Sandoval, Aaron Hill and Stephen Drew.  You need SB.  Bourn stole 60 bases last year and scored close to 100 RUNS (97).  He gives you what Ellsbury gives you, just not as flashy and not as well.  Like a B- version of Ellsbury, Ellsbury-Lite and can be found 8 rounds later.

Bruce is a young, talented player that is only starting his major league career.  He was the top prospect in the country  a couple years ago and has 25-30 HR potential.  He won’t steal you many bases, but will offer solid numbers playing half his games in tiny Great American.  In keeper leagues, he’s my pick.

Minnesota moves outside this year, affecting hitting conditions for those Twins.  Cuddyer also played a lot for the missing Morneau last year.  Morneau is no longer missing, but he is the RH bat in that lineup loaded with lefties.  He also offers power and plays both 1B/OF which can play huge, backing up Teixiera at 1B for your team.  Flexibility is always a plus in fantasy leagues – I like to own at least one guy that plays multiple positions on my team.

To sum up, depending on your needs and team holes, the choice may be any one of the 3.  Bourn if you need SB.  Bruce if you’re in a keeper league.  Cuddyer if you need a little flexibility.  All things being equal though, I take Bruce.  He’s young and talented.  He’s in a young and talented lineup playing in a small park tailor made for his sweet lefty swing.  Go with Bruce when the clock is winding down.
