2010 FANTASY BASEBALL RANKINGS: 40/40’s TOP 40 OVERALL

Football, for most, ended a couple of weeks ago.  The Superbowl is approaching and unless you’re a Colts or Saints fan, your season is over.  So like any sports fan (guy), the NBA, college basketball and hot stove keep you company until pitchers and catchers report in a couple weeks.

Fantasy baseball, for a lot of you, is something that you cover 24/7, 365.  For others, buying a magazine and reading it on the dumper the week before the draft is plenty. But like most, I am currently somewhere in-between and starting the process of fantasy baseball “research”.

I put together my TOP 40: OVERALL list which includes both hitters and pitchers (Separated lists, AL/NL-only and rankings to follow soon).  If you’re curious, I took player rankings from ESPN and CBS, averaged the two and then re-ordered the players.  I use this as a starting point before I begin to change everything.  Here comes the twist.  I value certain categories (HR, SB), skills (Power, Speed) and positions (SS, 2B) differently, so I move players up/down accordingly.  I tend to move up, or value, power/speed guys.  40/40, 30/30, 15/20 guys will get bumped up (B. Phillips over A. Hill).  I also value hitters more than I do pitchers during my drafts, so borderline hitters just make this list over borderline pitchers (Werth and Zimmerman over Verlander).  I feel like I can find bargains later in drafts and saves along the waiver wire (but strategy is for another day).  If it comes down to players of the same skill set and all things being equal, I tend to pick upside or the younger player (Sandoval and Votto over Youkilis and Morneau).  Position scarcity and mutli-position eligibility also can play a role in my thought process (Reynolds over Morales or A. Ramirez).

Listed below is an early edition of my TOP 40: OVERALL.  I also make adjustments to all my lists after reading The Baseball Prospectus and Ron Shandler’s Baseball Forecaster.  The former has not yet been released and the latter I just received.  I say early because this list will change at least ten times before my drafts due to injury, spring training performances, position battles, etc…  Thoughts?  Comments?
