- Carlos Pena TB – Went 3 for 4 with a HR and 4 RBI. He’s batting a cut over .200 and has been kind of cold lately. Only good for HR and BA aggravation. He and Mark Reynolds are brothers from another mother. Whose mom do you think would get pulled over in Arizona?
- Carlos Gonzalez COL – CarGo (not a fan of his nickname. I get it. Just not a big fan. Deserves better. Something more creative) hit another bomb on Thursday – making it 19 on the year. He’s on pace for 29/22. Yes please. Must start.
- Clint Barmes COL – Every year Barmes is forgotten about and every year he produces enough to be relevant in some leagues – usually better left for NL onlys. Plays 2B/SS. Only batting around .250 for the year, he did his part to improve that by going 2 for 5 with 3 RBI, a R and a SB.
- Dexter Fowler COL - He’s been terrible after the All-Star break and been bench worthy. He still is, but got the start on Thursday afternoon and rewarded Jim Tracy with a 3 for 5 performance including a 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R and a SB. Very nice. Now keep it up.
- Ike Davis NYM - Hit a 3-run shot off Cardinal starter Blake Hawksworth. It was Davis’ 15th of the season. He’s been up and down for a while – a decent CI or U option in deep mixed leagues.
- Matt Diaz ATL - With Nate McClouth getting sent down, playing time is up for grabs and Diaz wants some. He had a HR in the loss to the Nationals – getting hot in July since coming off the DL. Diaz warrants time in NL only leagues.
- Michael Stanton FLA – He’s a manchild. 2 for 3. 2 doubles. 2 RBI. Another BA anchor, he might be another to the mold of the aforementioned Mark Reynolds. I think that’s the first time I’ve ever used, said or written the word, “aforementioned.” Huh.
- Ian Desmond WAS - After a promising start to his freshman year, Desmond seems to hit the proverbial “rookie wall.” He’s slumping, batting .186 since June 15th – 32 games. Ouch. However, the young rookie did go 2 for 3 with a HR and and 2 R scored. He has potential and looks to be a part of the future their. Hang on to him – but start a better option if you have one for the time being.
- Adam Dunn WAS - Speaking of future’s… With the trade rumors swirling, Dunn continues to do what he do. HR. Number 24. He’ll be wearing another suit by Monday.
- Ubaldo Jimenez COL - He’s back. 7 INN. 6 K. 4 hits. 1 ER. And a W. It was the Pirates, but still.
- RA Dickey NYM - Arguably the Mets’ second or third most important pitcher right now, Dickey continues to throw effective innings. He went 8.1 INN on Thursday against the Cards while allowing only 1 run, 2 K, 2 BB and scattered 4 hits. He’s now 6-2 with 60 K, a 2.55 ERA and 1.20 WHIP over 84.2 INN. It’s not a fluke anymore. Pick him up if you need some pitching help.
- Dominic Brown PHI - He’s up. Shane Victorino is on the DL. Brown will get time. You get the picture. Keeper leagues – adios. NL – no mas. Deeper Mixed – take a shot.
- Logan Morrison FLA – SEE: Brown, Dominic. Substitute Victorino with Chris Coghlan, or moron busting his knee pie-ing someone. That’s right, another player ending his season celebrating.

Trade Deadline News: Oswalt to Phillies
- Roy Oswalt was dealt. The Astros hurler will be packing his bags and taking them to the city of Brotherly Love. To PHI for JA Happ and other pieces. VIA ESPN, “sources said the Astros will receive outfielder Anthony Gose as part of the deal.” Ken Rosenthal adds, “that the third player in the deal will be shortstop prospect Jonathan Villar.”
- Scott Podsednik was acquired by the Los Angeles Dodgers for two minor league pieces. He will replace Manny in the lineup until he gets healthy. Should be a couple more weeks. His fantasy value, though, is bound to take a hit eventually since two guys named Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier also patrol their outfield. To read more on the trade, click here.
- Jhonny Peralta was traded to the Detroit Tigers for minor league pitcher Giovanni Soto. More info, click here.

Fantasy Aces: Fantasy TOP 10 Pitchers: Scoring Down in ‘10
Scoring in the Majors this year is down a bit from the last year.
MLB teams are averaging 4.45 Runs/Game in ‘10 – down from 4.61 in ‘09 and 4.64 in ‘08. Five no-hitters already with reason to believe we should see at least one more before the end of this 162-game schedule. What could it be a result of? Tougher steroid testing? No “greenies” or amphetamines? Better pitching? The influx of young talent? Most likely a combination of some sort.
Either way, pitching is better this year and they have penetrated the fantasy TOP 100. 49 out of the TOP 100 are pitchers this season (37 finished in the TOP 100 in ‘09). Food for thought.
TOP 10 Pitchers in Standard 5×5 roto scoring leagues.
- Adam Wainwright STL - 14-6. 153.1 INN. 142 K. 2.23 ERA. 1.03 WHIP. The leader of the pack, Wainwright is the current top dog. He pitched yesterday against the Mets, giving up 6 earned runs, the most he’s allowed in a single season all year. He’s a fantasy stud and should continue to add wins within the weaker NL Cental. Pitching behind a guy named Chris Carpenter does not hurt either.
- Josh Johnson FLA – 10-3. 141.1 INN. 146 K. 1.71 ERA. 0.99 WHIP. This guy is a beast and I’m a little upset I passed on him in two drafts. I want to say it was the 4th round in one draft – 6th in another. I said a little upset. Either way, I passed, waiting ’til at least the 10th round to start drafting pitching like always. IF I had taken him, I would have noticed the sub 2 ERA and sub 1 WHIP. Not fair.
- Roy Halladay PHI – 11-8. 162 INN. 140 K. 2.27 ERA. 1.04 WHIP. I actually thought he was going to win 25 games this year. Seriously. With that Phillies lineup. But somewhere along the lines this year, they forgot how to hit and injuries have taken their toll on the defending NL Champions. I said it was stupid then and I’ll say it was stupid now. Can you imagine if Ruben Amaro didn’t give away Cliff Lee in the off-season? Has to annoy you a little Phillies’ fans since they’ve been shopping Werth to trade for Oswalt… All you had to do was keep Cliff. Roy and Cliff. Like Simon and Garfunkel. Or Bert and Ernie. Or Ocho and T.O. I can’t wait for football.
- Cliff Lee TEX – 9-4. 139 INN. 114 K. 2.39 ERA. 0.89 WHIP. Speaking of Cliff Lee, the guy has been lights out after his first couple starts off the DL. He’s coming off a no decision against Oakland where he went 9 INN, 1 unearned run, 13 K, 5 hits and 0 BB. He’s been a huge addition for me in my mixed leagues and should be started and left alone in any league you are in. Roy Halladay – Cliff Lee – Cole Hamels. I’m just sayin’.
- Ubaldo Jimenez COL – 15-2. 134.2 INN. 120 K. 2.74 ERA. 0.89 WHIP. Mr. Jimenez has “slipped” since his ridiculoso start to the season, but is still a must start through thick and thin. He’s given up 10 earned in his last two starts; he should snap out of it soon. Should.
- Jon Lester BOS – 11-5. 135.2 INN. 143 K. 2.91 ERA. 1.09 WHIP. The second southpaw to make our list and still climbing. In his last seven starts, he has allowed less than 3 ER all but twice while winning four. Also had 13 punchouts his last start where he took a no-hitter into the 5th.
- Felix Hernandez SEA – 7-7. 160.2 INN. 145 K. 2.85 ERA. 1.13 WHIP. Started slow in April and May but has turned up the heat this summer. King Felix is now the only ace in Seattle with the departure of Cliff Lee – its unfortunate that tandem didn’t get more time to perform. Felix and Cliff. Cliff and Felix. That sounds better. I’ll stop.
- Carl Pavano MIN – 13-6. 148.2 INN. 83 K. 3.20 ERA. 1.02 WHIP. Yup. Carl. F’n. Pavano. That’s the great thing about baseball and fantasy sports. A leftover draft pick in March has been a TOP 10 pitcher thus far. I guess this is what the Yankees were hoping for back in the day when they signed him to a fat contract and got all of what, 3 starts in 4 years?
- Mat Latos SD – 11-4. 112.2 INN. 106 K. 2.47 ERA. 0.99 WHIP. The highly touted prospect has lived up to expectations and looks to anchor the Padre staff for years to come. I traded for him in one league before the year started. Worked out well – I used him like a cheap date – hung out for a while, had some fun and then traded her in for a better option later in the night (Bell and Marmol during All-Star break).
- Jered Weaver LAA – 9-7. 141 INN. 155 K. 3.19 ERA. 1.09 WHIP. He’s on pace to shatter his personal record for strikeouts in a season while posting a nice ERA and WHIP. With Lackey’s preference for Boston and big bucks, Weaver has taken over the role of alpha male on that staff and has risen to the occasion this season. If you drafted Weaver a little later in drafts, you have to be thoroughly pleased.

Fantasy 40/40: Random Notes From Around the Diamond
- Matt Garza TB - No-No number five this season in MLB, the third the Rays have been apart of this year. Weird. Garza blew out his arm last night for 120 pitches and was throwing straight cheese. No-hitting the Detroit Tigers, Garza spotted his fastball around the zone all night and the Tigers couldn’t square anything decent up. Thanks Captain Obvious.
- Joe Mauer MIN - 5 for 5. HR. 7 RBI. 3 R. Joey Mac had a game in the 19-1 shallacking of the KC Royals last night. He wasn’t the only Twin to produce nice numbers, but he was by far the best.
- Jose Bautista TOR - Bombs over Baghdad. Bautista launched number 28 last night, a three run shot. That’s back to back games.
- David Ortiz BOS – “You not Big Paaapi!” Love that commercial. Papi was big last night, going deep twice against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim of Calaifornia of America. He busted out of his mini slump with 2 HR, 3 RBI and 2 R scored.
- Aaron Hill TOR - He was a sexy pick in March. I didn’t like him. 2 for 4 with a HR and 3 RBI yesterday. That’s long ball #14 this season. He’s batting .202. .202 BA. Ben Rothalasomething. Nice pick Cowwahh!
- Adam Lind TOR - Another guy trying to find his way in 2010, Lind might be showing signs of blossoming. He went 3 for 4 with a HR, 2 RBI and 2 R scored. He’s hit in 5 of the last 7 with 2 HR in that span. Another Blue Jay that has disappointed, he is still on pace for 22 HR.
- Seth Smith COL – Brad Hawpe has been a waste of space this year and Smith, with Ryan Spilboroghs are getting a bunch of time. Smith, with that said time, took Brad Lidge into the bleachers in the 9th yesterday. Lidge, close to blowing another save, escaped with the bases loaded. Smith can be used in the deeper mixed leagues if you need OF help. Lidge just sucks.
- Danny Valencia MIN - Valencia had a Mauer-esque day and went a perfect 4 for 4 with a grandslam, his first HR of his MLB career. He was called up for depth, but he is their future, and may have bought some time with this performance.
- Matt Wieters BAL - 2 for 2 with 2 HR and 2 BB. Off the DL and feeling good. Maybe he finally produces like we all expected – or those of you who wasted a high round pick on a catcher. Stupid.
